When visiting the Western Ghats, one of the must-see attractions is the Vasota Fort and the Nageshwar Cave that contains a temple of Lord Shiva. This fort is classified as a forest fort and nestled deep within a thick forest. To get to the fort, you’ll need a special permission from the Forest Department. Coming without a local guide is not advisable, as the fort is completely surrounded by dense forest, and camping or staying at the fort is strictly disallowed, but if you do tell the local boatmen or hoteliers in advance, they can help you get the necessary permission to visit the fort, Vasota Fort is actually situated in the Koyna Sanctuary. Trekking up to the fort is extremely arduous and goes through dense forest. From the top of the fort, you’ll have a breathtaking view of Tapola, Koyna Sanctuary and its surroundings, and also Chakdev, Rasalgad, Sumargad, and Mahipatgad. The sheer drop from the fort will also make you think of the Konkan ridge of Harichandragad.
